February Educational Program Presenter

Karen Halbert: Dynamic Symmetry and Composition

How dynamic symmetry might help your compositions: What is dynamic symmetry? What is it not? Karen will be analyze paintings by iconic, historic New Mexican artists to work by Halbert and Handell using dynamic symmetry.

Halbert became a full-time artist after careers as a professor of mathematics, a computer programmer, and then as a technical Wall Street executive in New York City. She moved to Santa Fe in 2005 and has thrived in the artist-rich community. Karen was represented by the Marigold Gallery on Canyon Road until the pandemic. Soon afterwards she joined the Karen Wray Fine Art Gallery in Los Alamos. Since 2012 Karen has also served as the webmaster for the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. During the pandemic she took the opportunity to reach back to her mathematics’ training, doing a deep dive in dynamic symmetry. Halbert has been honored to join forces with Albert Handell for several workshops, including an upcoming workshop in August 2026, sponsored by the Bluebird Studio of Santa Fe.

Kathleen Keating

Fundamentals for Copying a Master Drawing

Kathleen will present beginning steps for copying a Bargue plate using the Sight Size Method utilizing a plumb line. Using the one-to-one comparison method provides the artist with a high level of optical accuracy for realistic representation. It allows the development for strong foundational skills in proportion and measurement through careful copying. Kathleen studied at the Florence Academy of Art in 2004, 2012 and 2019. Art creation runs in the family as her father and grandfather were both artists.
