January Educational Program Presenter

Harriette Tsosie: Symbol and Metaphor in Art: Ceremonial Rattles and Paintings

Harriette will be talking about symbols and language in her artwork as well as rattles that are used to "call the spirits" in Native American ceremonies. She collaborates with her husband Cat Tsosie who grows the gourds for the rattles and does all the prep work and they both create the designs. Harriette does all the painting using the same techniques as she does in her painting practice which involves a lot of layering. She will talk about how everything is symbolic and has meaning including all the regalia her husband wears when he dances as an initiated Gourd Dancer. Harriette is a full-time artist, living and working in Albuquerque. She has worked primarily in encaustic and acrylic for the past 25 years. Her degree is in English literature with a minor in Art.
